About the 8–12 class

Age groups are a starting point, not a wall. A capable 7-year-old can move up to the 8–12 class with coach approval — that's the $125/month membership, with four classes a week instead of two — and a 13-year-old can stay in kids if that's the safer fit. A ready 8+ can move up to adult classes with coach approval — that's a move to the adult membership at $149/month, with full access to the whole schedule. Both kids classes run at the same time on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so siblings are one drop-off.

How It Works

THREE STEPS
TO CLASS.

1

BOOK THE FREE CLASS

Text us your kid's name and age. We'll confirm the class and have them on the roster — and tell you where to park.

2

DRESS THEM SIMPLE

T-shirt and athletic shorts or sweatpants — no zippers, pockets, or hard buttons. Bare feet on the mat. No uniform to buy.

3

COME & WATCH

Arrive a few minutes early. A coach meets you, gets your kid onto the mat at their own pace, and you watch the whole class from the lounge.

4

JUST WANT IN?

Don't need the trial — or just watched them love it? Sign up online right now. The first month is $49. Coming back after a break? Use the join link on your kid's class card above.

For Parents

WHAT TO
EXPECT.

The kids program is designed and overseen by Head Coach Royce Miller — a black belt under Margot Ciccarelli with a degree in early childhood education. Expectations are clear, progressions are age-appropriate, and nobody gets forced onto the mat.

  • Safety first — a structured room built for learning to solve problems
  • Belts follow the IBJJF kids system, and rank is earned on skill — not age or attendance
  • Shy or nervous kids can watch from the edge until they're ready — that's planned for
  • Parents welcome at every class, with a clear view from the lounge
  • Losing a round and trying again is part of the design — it's how problem solvers get built

More questions? The 4–7 and 8–12 pages answer the ones parents actually ask.

KIDS MEMBERSHIP
NOTES.

No surprises — here's exactly how a kids membership works.

Pricing & What's Included

  • First class free — one trial class per kid, for Michigan residents. Then the first month is $49.
  • After that: $100/month for Little Kids 4–7 (Tue & Thu) or $125/month for Kids 8–12 (Mon–Thu).
  • Moving up from the 4–7 class to the 8–12 class moves the membership to $125/month — four classes a week instead of two.
  • Kids memberships cover the kids classes. Training in adult classes requires coach approval and a move to the adult membership ($149/month, full schedule).

Billing & Payment

  • Month-to-month and renews automatically — no contracts.
  • Billed the same date each month as your signup. A valid payment method on file is required. All payments are non-refundable.

Pausing, Cancelling & Coming Back

  • Pause for $30/month for up to 4 months — your rate is preserved. Requires 10 days' notice by email to info@annarborbjj.com before your billing date; pauses aren't retroactive.
  • Cancel with the same 10 days' notice — no cancellation fee. A $120 re-enrollment fee applies if you cancel and return later, so for a break of 4 months or less, pausing is more economical.
  • Pauses for an injury sustained training here are free, with no notice requirement.

What to Wear

No-Gi only — t-shirt and athletic shorts or sweatpants are fine for the first month while you get proper gear (rashguard and grappling shorts or spats). No zippers, buttons, pockets, or hard materials, and no training with any skin infection, open wound, or contagious condition.

“My kids have already learned so much. The best part? We don't have to convince them to go — they want to go. The coach and his partner are wonderful people, and it honestly feels like family.”

— Cinthya P. · Google Review

“My daughter (11 yr old) has been training under coach Royce for 3 years. He's a great coach with passion for the sport and the students. Without a doubt the best bang for the buck — flexible hours, unlimited training, modern training style, and a cool environment.”

— Rick S. · Google Review

“I've trained under him for 4 years… I've earned nearly 200 tournament wins, with over 90% being 1st place finishes. His degree in childhood development makes him exceptionally great at coaching kids as well as adults.”
